Online booking for optometrists, so an eye exam is as easy to book as a pair of glasses is to buy

Patients can order lenses from their phone in a minute. If booking an exam takes a phone call during working hours, some will skip the test and keep wearing an out-of-date prescription, or go to a larger chain that lets them pick a time at midnight.

We set up and connect online booking for independent optometry practices, using the tool you have or helping you choose one. Your team decides what can be booked, how long each visit takes and which times are offered.

What we found on optometry websites

In November 2026 we looked at the homepages of 1,921 optometry practices in Canada, the US, the UK and Australia. The method and tables are in our optometry website study.

1. 51% had no online booking link or software we could find

Canada was at 52% across 1,665 sites, and the US at 41% across 236. Where we found a way in, it was often a phone number or an email address.

2. We identified booking software on 9%

Our detector was built for clinic booking systems, and its labels don’t map cleanly onto eye care software. We aren’t publishing a ranking of tools. A practice with a tool we don’t recognise is counted as having none.

3. 382 sites ran on Shopify

About one in five. For these practices, buying is built into the site, and exam booking may be a separate thing, or missing.

4. 27% had a contact form and 44% showed an email address

For a patient who prefers not to call, a form is better than nothing. It still leaves them waiting for a reply.

We looked at homepages only. A booking page one click deeper isn’t counted, which is itself a clue.

How optometry patients book

Eye care visits are varied, and each type has its own needs.

The annual exam. The simplest booking: adult, routine, a standard slot. Many patients book this once a year or every two years, so reminders matter as much as the first booking.

The child’s exam. A parent needs a time that works around school, plus reassurance that you see children. Back-to-school is a natural busy time, so capacity is worth planning.

The contact lens fitting or renewal. A first fitting takes longer than a renewal. A single “book an eye exam” button that treats them the same leads to wrong slot lengths and overrun days.

The urgent concern. A patient with a red, painful or suddenly changed eye shouldn’t be pushed through a routine form. The page needs a clear phone number and a line about what to do if you can’t help.

The coverage question. Public plans and insurance for eye exams differ by province, state, age and plan, and patients often ask before booking. We keep this general and point to the plan or the practice for details.

The glasses pickup or adjustment. Not an exam, but still an appointment. Some practices let patients book it, and others let them walk in.

Booking and the optical counter

An optometry practice has a second schedule that many health clinics lack: the optical side. Frames are collected, adjusted and ordered, and those visits compete for the same team and the same space as exams.

1. Decide what is bookable

Some practices take appointments for frame fittings and adjustments. Others keep the optical open to walk-ins. Either works, but the website should say which, so patients don’t arrive expecting the other.

2. Link booking to buying

After an exam, patients often want to try frames. A confirmation message that mentions the optical, with its hours, saves the question at the desk.

3. Keep the day balanced

If exams fill the book, nobody is available to fit glasses. We help you shape the schedule so the two sides support each other.

What we do for optometry practices

1. A visit-type map

We list the exam and fitting types you want booked online, with realistic lengths, and those you want patients to ask about. Your optometrists and optical team decide.

2. Connect the tool you already use

We link your booking page from the homepage, exam pages, footer and Google profile. Using something else already, or choosing now? We explain the options and don’t sell software. Tell us what you have.

3. Slot rules that protect the day

Exam lengths, buffers for dilation or testing, different rules per optometrist, and how far ahead patients can book. We help you set sensible defaults so the schedule doesn’t fill with awkward gaps.

4. Reminders and recalls

Where your tool allows, we help you set confirmation and reminder messages in your voice with an easy way to reschedule. A recall prompt for patients due another exam is worth setting up. See our guide to reducing patient no-shows.

5. Booking from Google and your shop

We add a booking link to your Google Business Profile where Google offers one, and a clear “book an exam” route in your shop’s header and product pages. For Shopify sites, we keep exam booking separate from checkout so the two don’t confuse each other. Our booking button guide shows how it works on Google.

6. A test run on a phone

We walk through each booking path on a phone, as a new patient would, up to the final step, and stop before submitting.

Not sure where your clinic stands? We’ll look at it the way a new patient does and send a short written report. No pitch.

The rules for optometry booking

Booking touches patient information, and eye care adds a few particular points.

1. Your software holds the records

Details entered through a booking tool live in that tool under its privacy terms and your own. We don’t access or store patient records. We configure the page and the settings. Ask your software provider where its data is stored and how consent is handled.

2. Exam fees and prescriptions in the US

In the US, the FTC’s Contact Lens Rule says prescribers must give the patient a copy of the contact lens prescription at the end of the fitting, and cannot require them to buy lenses, pay additional fees or sign a waiver in exchange for it. A booking page should not suggest that a patient must buy from you to receive their prescription. Source: FTC, Contact Lens Rule guide for prescribers and sellers.

3. Everything else varies

Privacy law, consent, advertising and fee-statement rules differ by province, state and country. We could not verify one standard for optometry, so we read the guidance for your region and show you what we found. This is not legal advice.

Common problems with optometry booking

1. One button for every visit

A patient booking a first contact lens fitting gets a standard exam slot, and the day runs late.

2. Booking hidden inside the shop

The header says Shop, the footer says Contact, and the exam link sits on a page nobody reads.

3. No path for urgent concerns

A worried patient fills in a form and waits, when a phone call was needed.

4. Unclear on coverage

Patients abandon the form because they can’t tell if their plan applies. A short, general note helps.

5. No recall

Patients forget they are due. Without a reminder, a good practice loses them to the next ad they see.

6. Separate tools that don’t talk

A booking system, an ordering system and a recall system each hold part of the picture, and patients receive duplicate or conflicting messages.

Questions owners ask

Which booking software should we use?

If you have one, start there. If you are choosing, we look at your practice management software and what it supports. Using something specific? Tell us.

Do you sell the software?

No. We configure and connect what you have or choose. You contract with the provider.

Can patients book any type of visit?

No. You choose which visits are available online and which need a call. You can change this at any time.

Can parents book for several children at once?

That depends on the tool. We check what yours supports and set it up as far as it allows.

How do you handle urgent concerns?

We put a clear phone number and a short note beside the booking button. Online booking is for planned visits.

Do you handle patient information?

No. Records stay in your software. We never access them.

Can we sell contact lenses online and still take bookings?

Yes. We keep the two routes separate and clear.

How long does it take?

It depends on the tool and the number of visit types. We give an estimate after reviewing your set-up.
