Why don’t patients book online at my clinic?

Usually because they can’t find the button, the booking page is confusing or the next step is slower than calling. Find where patients drop out, fix the biggest block first and test on a phone. Some people will always prefer the phone, and that is fine.

First, make sure it can be found

In our November 2026 scan of 4,348 physio and chiro homepages, 33% of physio and 26% of chiro homepages had no online booking we could find. If the button is in a menu, in small grey text or below the fold, patients won’t see it. See the study.

Open your own homepage on a phone and see how many taps it takes to reach a first-visit time.

The usual reasons

  1. The button is hidden or vague. “Contact” and “Enquire” don’t say you can book now. Use “Book your first visit”.
  2. The booking page asks too much. Long forms and account creation put people off.
  3. The appointment types are confusing. Internal names such as “Initial Assessment 60 min (Tx)” don’t help. Use plain words.
  4. No suitable times appear. If new patients see an empty calendar, they call elsewhere. Check practitioner schedules and booking windows.
  5. The page is slow or broken on phones. Test on mobile data.
  6. Nervous or unsure patients want to talk first. Someone with a complicated injury may want to ask a question. Offer a phone number and a message option next to the button.
  7. Trust is missing. If the page has no reviews, photos or clear details about the first visit, people hesitate.

How to find your own drop-off

Check your booking software for the number of online bookings per month, and your website’s analytics for clicks on the booking button, if tracked. If visits are high and clicks are low, the button is the problem. If clicks are high and bookings are low, the booking page is.

Ask your front desk what patients say when they call: “I couldn’t find a time”, “I wasn’t sure which one to pick”. Those answers show where to look.

Fixes in order of effort

  • Move the button to the first screen and label it clearly.
  • Rename appointment types in everyday language.
  • Open up more online slots for new patients, if your schedule allows.
  • Shorten the form to what you need for the first visit. Move extra questions to intake forms after booking. See intake forms.
  • Add reviews and a short “what to expect” note near the button.
  • Keep a visible phone option.

Not sure where your clinic stands? We’ll look at it the way a new patient does and send a short written report. No pitch.

What not to expect

Online booking won’t replace the phone, and it won’t suit every patient. Older patients or those in acute pain may prefer to call. The aim is to give the people who want to book online a clear way, including at night when the front desk is closed.

Questions owners ask

Should I stop offering phone booking?

No. Offer both, and make sure calls are answered. See how to stop missing calls.

Do I need to offer every appointment type online?

No. Start with a first visit and add others once it works.

Could my Google profile be part of the problem?

Yes. If your profile has no booking link, patients searching on their phone have no quick path. See the profile booking button.
